Can you thin out Flex Seal Liquid?

Flex Seal Liquid is one of the most versatile waterproofing products on the market. Its ability to coat, seal, and protect virtually any surface has made it a go-to for DIYers and professionals alike. But is it possible to thin out Flex Seal Liquid?

While solvents can be added to many traditional paints or sealers, Flex Seal Liquid is engineered to be used straight out of the can for optimal results. Thinning out Flex Seal Liquid is not recommended.

Why you shouldn’t thin it:

  • It may not adhere properly.

  • It may not cure evenly or fully.

  • It could lose its flexibility and waterproof integrity.

  • It could void product effectiveness

Adding solvents like mineral spirits, acetone, or paint thinners can impact the formula and affect the performance of the product like curing, adhesion, and waterproofing. In other words, you’ll likely end up with a weaker, less durable coating.

Best Practices for a Thinner Application

If your goal is to apply Flex Seal Liquid more lightly or over a large surface, consider these options:

  • Brush it on thinly: Apply a light coat using a paintbrush or foam applicator. You can always build up multiple coats.

  • Use a roller: A paint roller can help you spread it more evenly and create a smoother finish on large flat areas.
